Priscilla- Work in Progress 2

Here’s an update of Priscilla.  I exaggerated her most prominent features and pushed her shaping.  Even though I’m not terribly worried about color at this point, I think the coloring is pretty successful.  Nothing but a delicious, sexy cherry red.

With each character, my technique is evolving, and I’m very happy with the results.  They’re still sketches, they still have a lot of energy, but they’re beginning to stand on their own.

Dmetri- Work in Progress 1

This guy’s tentatively named “Dmetri”.  I got inspired watching Wimbledon over the weekend.  I have a bit of a crush on Roger Federer, so I decided to model a character after him.

Dmetri’s not supposed to resemble Federer outright, hence the Russian name, which may or may not change.  Still, I want to go back and do some studies of Federer’s face.  He’s got some unusual features, and I’m interested in exploring them further… maybe not for Dmetri, after all, I don’t want them to resemble each other too much, but perhaps for future characters down the road.

B.B. Kink- Work in Progress 1

Here’s a second character I’m working on for the portfolio.  I’m still experimenting with style and technique, as you can see by the sketchy pen and marker treatment.

This is already the second revision I’ve made to this character, although the first version wasn’t worth showing off (dull as dishwater!)   I’m  planning on another pass to further exaggerate his shapes.

Priscilla- Work in Progress 1

I’m creating  new work for my portfolio, and I’m trying to challenge myself.  I’m drawing inspiration from fashion, music, and graffiti to push these new designs away from the Mr. Grant style and into a edgier, sexier, more urban direction.

At the same time, my new work still need to fit in with the previous stuff, so I have to find some areas of overlap.  Continuing the robot theme will help to bridge the old and the new.

Priscilla here is the first character of the new batch.   Her design is loosely based on a sports car.  I’m planning a series of sports car robot girls.  She’s not finished yet- heck, I’m not even sure if I’ll keep the name, but I thought I’d throw her up here so you can watch her progress and see how she evolves.

Adventures in Figure Drawing #1

Posted in Sketches on May 24th, 2008 by g-t3k

I’m trying to make a habit of drawing and painting on a more regular basis, so it was time that I brushed up on my figure drawing skills.  The last time I did a figure drawing was probably about seven years ago when I was still in college.

Since arriving here almost two years ago, I’ve been meaning to sit in on a session at Hipbone Studio which holds open figure drawing three times a week. I finally got off my butt and did it.  I was a bit nervous; I didn’t know how my first drawings would come out, but I really enjoyed my time there.  The sessions are three hours long, but the time flew by, and I can’t wait to go back.

Fortunately, my drawings didn’t come out to badly, although there’s definitely room for improvement.  I’m trying to learn to make more clean and decisive marks, and I want to begin pushing the pose and form, making my drawings more expressive with a better sense of volume.  The hardest part of starting up again was getting the timing down.  Oddly enough, I was having more problems building up the longer 30 minute poses than I was with the 5 minute drawings.  Anyway, it’s a start.  Hopefully I’ll improve.

The drawing above is one of the better drawings that came out of the session.
