1960’s Diner Sketches

Posted in Concept Art, Illustration, Sketches on February 2nd, 2010 by g-t3k

I probably should have posted these before yesterday’s color studies, as they came earlier the process, and the final Flash module matches the layout of the color studies.   Still, I  like these drawings, so I thought I’d post them as well.  They’re looser than most of my concept work, and a good study in mood, a good match for the serious subject matter.

Sketching the Australian Open

Posted in Illustration, Sketches on January 27th, 2010 by g-t3k

Mike’s had the TV locked down on ESPN this whole week while the Australian Open has been going on, so  I started doing some quick sketches of tennis players.  Here’s one of the better ones.

Burnbot Sketch

Burnbot

I haven’t shown off a robot in a while- except for the sexy lady robots (2)… they don’t count.  That’s a different series entirely.  For those of you who’ve followed me for a while, here’s a quick little sketch of one I did tonight in the old style of a guy named “Burnbot”.    Click to embiggen.

Brent- Work in Progress 1

Posted in Characters, Illustration, Sketches, Works in Progress on September 16th, 2008 by g-t3k

I think this is one of the best drawings from this series so far.  He took a little while to get down.  For a little while, it seemed as if nothing was coming out like I wanted, and I had to re-draw him over and over, but it was worth the effort.

The kilt was a spontaneous detail, but it was a nice touch that gave him a touch more personality.

Lisa Marie- Work in Progress 2

Posted in Characters, Illustration, Robots, Sketches, Works in Progress on September 6th, 2008 by g-t3k

Here’s another pencil sketch for the design of Lisa Marie’s body.

I’m pushing her proportions further, and I gave her a new head.  She’s looking very much like an alien in this one.  In fact, she’s looking quite different than the original, but I swear I started out with the previous drawing in mind.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing at this stage.  I’m still trying to figure her out, and I don’t mind trying out different ideas at this point.

Trent- Head Sketch 02

Here’s a new head sketch of Trent, giving him more pronounced features, a stronger (somewhat bewildered) expression, and giving him more of an Asian flavor.

Here’s a quick head sketch I drew tonight.  The haircut was inspired by Julie Andrews. =)

Trent- Head Sketch 01

Posted in Characters, Illustration, Sketches, Works in Progress on August 24th, 2008 by g-t3k

I wasn’t too pleased with my earlier drawing for Trent, so I’ll have to revisit his design sometime soon.  However, his face was showing some promise, so today, I decided to explore its design further.

Here’s the best drawing of the bunch.

As I rework these character designs, I try to push their essence, their prominent geometry, so that their faces, their bodies, all have unique characteristics that play well off each other.  For instance, whereas Dmetri’s head his taking on a more narrow, cylindrical quality, Trent’s might by broader, defined by curvy cheekbones, and a strong square jaw.  In this drawing, he’s even taken on a slight Asian flavor.

Whereas I’m largely settled on Dmetri’s design now, I may still play around with Trent some more.
